See What Others Have Said

It was extremely helpful to take your class, and I have no doubt that it was a major contributing factor in my getting into the college of my dreams. Thank you for your class!

—Nicholas Dube, Harvard University, 2012

Writing college essays is such a daunting task. I applied to seven schools and some required more than just the Common Application essay, so I had quite a few essays to write and wanted to put my best work forward when trying to persuade a college to accept me.  Justin helped me in more ways than I can thank him for.  He taught me how important it was to tell a story and evoke emotion to stand out from the crowd. From teaching me great writing techniques to helping me with wording and grammar I may have missed without him, Justin's writing tips helped get me accepted into every college I applied to, including competitive schools such as Ohio State, Boston University, and Penn State. His lessons and techniques are truly invaluable and helped get me to where I am today.

Princeton offered early action admission to my son, and our family couldn't be happier with the results. Words cannot express our deep appreciation and gratitude for all Justin’s professional guidance and valuable advice. Not only did he help get him on track with the essays, but he inspired him by giving insight into college life. I reread his Princeton essay, and I know it is my son.

This book really helps to cultivate the techniques necessary to write a successful college essay. It has an excellent way of showing students how to expound on essays they have already written, and of helping them to begin an essay from scratch. This book refers to the techniques that should be incorporated into an essay and how to make these techniques effective. It also shows examples of college essays written by other students that serve as a template of what is necessary to write a successful essay. In all, this book is a great way to not only start but also improve ones college essay for a successful college application.

To put it simply, I wouldn't have gotten into my alma mater without the help of Justin Nevin.  I got accepted early, received a substantial scholarship and, when I met my admissions officer, he mentioned that my essay was what made my application really stand out from the crowd of other applicants.  Justin's writing advice was invaluable and helped me on my way into college and beyond.

The stakes were high, the word counts low and, to make matters worse, I had not written a story about myself since elementary school. Luckily, Justin Nevin was there to help coach me through the process of writing college essays. His techniques and exercises encouraged me to see the stories buried in seemingly ordinary events and to write about them thoughtfully. His exacting approach to language and focus on reflections rather than conclusions continue to inform my writing.

Justin has a good sense for the college essay, but more importantly, he has a good sense for prospective students.  He was a good partner for Carolyn in helping her hear her own voice.  And it was great to sit back and let the process work with Justin’s support!

I wanted to thank you for all your time. The readings we did were very helpful in providing a prototype for a successful essay, and I really appreciated your discussions on the finer points of the writing process that other teachers often don't focus on. Your seminar sparked something in my writing and really brought it to a new level.

—Miranda M., Harvard University, 2012

Justin helped my daughter to find her voice and convey her unique qualities. I will definitely hire him again when my other children apply to college. A terrific writing coach!
